Exodus 7

Today's Passage: Exodus 7

In Exodus 5:2, Pharaoh claims to not know who the LORD (Yahweh) was. Exodus 7 is the start of God showing Pharaoh and all of Egypt that he is the one true God over all of creation. Exodus 7:5 says, “The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the Israelites from among them.”

This purpose is repeated in God’s messages to Pharaoh and in His descriptions of what He was doing. Both the Egyptians and the new nation of Israel would not be able to deny that the direct involvement of the God of Israel was the source of their freedom. God points back to the plagues and the Exodus many times throughout the rest of the Old Testament as an illustration of His strength and love for His people.

In the first miracle, Aaron’s staff turns into a serpent when he throws it down, and then the magicians of Pharaoh either use trickery to make it look like they have done the same thing or they use evil supernaturalism. The serpent created by God from the staff swallows up the other serpents, illustrating the superiority of God’s power.

In the first of ten plagues, God turns the Nile River, the canals, ponds, all pools of water, and even water filling wood and stone vessels into blood. This was not a figurative thing; the water actually turned to blood. Each plague represents, again, that God is the only true God and is in control of everything. Each one was a blow to multiple Egyptian gods. This specific plague showed Knhum, the “guardian of the Nile”, Hapi, the “spirit of the Nile”, and Osiris, “who had the Nile as his bloodstream”, were all powerless in the face of Yahweh.

What in your life is taking God’s place as the superior one to be worshiped? How has God shown you that He is the ultimate one who deserves glory?

I find that too often I'm worshiping comfort (when His plan runs contradictory). He has faithfully shown more than once that His plan really is better than what I'd decided I wanted....
