Exodus 2:1-14

Today's Passage: Exodus 2:1-14
The new King of Egypt was not like previous Pharaohs who respected the Hebrews because of Joseph. This king cared only about power and one thing was clear to Pharaoh and the Egyptians, God was with his people. He was blessing and protecting the Hebrews and causing them to multiply in population. Pharaoh knew this and was afraid, so he made laws to kill the Hebrew boys that were born, but two unlikely heroes stand up to these evil decrees.
The Hebrew midwives were specifically told to kill all the Hebrew boys that were born. The end of chapter 1 tells us that the “midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them.” When faced with pressure to do something evil, they chose to honor God despite the consequences.
The hero of our chapter is a Levite mother, who refused to follow the decree and hid Moses in order to protect him. After she could no longer hide him, she trusted the Lord to protect him in/through the Nile river. She knew that the decree was evil and she knew that God could protect her son - so she chose to do what honored God.
We are faced with hard decisions on a daily basis. Decisions at work, school, home, or with friends that either honor God or honor man. Sometimes the pressure to follow the world can be tremendous, but there are two points from our text that can help us in those moments.
Family discussion:
Has honoring God ever cost you something? Was it worth it?
What’s another example of someone who honored God rather than honored man?

The hero of our chapter is a Levite mother, who refused to follow the decree and hid Moses in order to protect him. We are faced with hard decisions on a daily basis. Decisions at work, school, home, or with friends that either honor God or honor man. Sometimes the pressure to follow the world can be tremendous, but there are two points from our text that can help us in those moments.
1. God honored those who honored him. When the midwives refused to obey the King of Egypt, God turned around and blessed them with families of their own. The text says that God dealt well with the midwives because they honored him.
Another example is the mother of Moses. After she puts Moses in the basket and sends him down the Nile in order to save his life, God honors her by allowing her to nurse Moses for Pharaoh’s daughter. I’m sure she thought doing the right thing meant she would never see her son again, but God allowed her to nurse and raise Moses.
2. God is working behind the scenes for our good and his glory. With a story like this, we can’t lose sight of the bigger picture. It may not seem like doing the right thing pays off that much in the end, but this story sets up Moses to free/deliver God’s people from the Egyptians. Our small acts of obedience have an eternal impact whether we see them or not.
