Exodus 1

Today's Passage: Exodus 1
We are starting a new book of the Bible, this time before the formal nation of Israel has been established!! Before we begin, watch this video about Exodus 1-18:
Overview: Exodus 1-18
At this point, the population of the Hebrew people has grown from ~70 people (Genesis 46:8-27) to ~2 million people! The royalty of Egypt don’t remember Joseph and are afraid of the growing Hebrew population so the Pharaoh takes measures to oppress the Hebrews and limit their population growth. However, this was not the will of the Lord!
The Hebrew midwives, though not in a huge amount of Scripture, are some of my favorite characters in the Bible. They are one of the first representatives of women fighting for the continuation of the line that would lead to the birth of the Messiah (which also includes Rahab, Tamar, Ruth, etc). In this situation, they revere God more than they fear Pharaoh, and thus go against his orders to murder the sons of the Hebrew women. The two midwives mentioned were most likely the leaders of their profession, and led the other midwives well enough that the rest of the group listened. The entire midwife population seems to have obeyed God, not man.
What is the relationship shown between fear and faith here? They most likely feared Pharaoh and what he would do to them if they did not obey, but they knew what was right in God’s sight and what wasn’t. They acted on the same principle that the apostles did in the book of Acts: “But Peter and John answered them, ‘Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.’”- Acts 4:19-20
Are you willing to stand up for what God says is right even if it puts you in a difficult position? Does your faith in God outweigh your fear of man?
