Joel 1

Today's Passage: Joel 1
Phone a friend! Do you remember that option on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire,”
where contestants could call someone they know and ask for help to an problem they
didn’t have an answer for? It’s nice to be able to call on somebody who can provide
assistance for us when we are in need.
Joel recognizes that in the case of sin, the person we should run TO is actually the very
person we most frequently run FROM. In the midst of a broken situation in a wayward
nation, Joel utters these words: “To you, O LORD, I call.” As hard as it is at times to
face the God we’ve sinned against, it is still the only person we should turn to.
That’s exactly what repentance is: turning away from sin and toward God. Today, if you
need a lifeline and a call to be made is on your to-do list, please make sure you call the
right person for help. Vices, functional saviors, and lesser beings are of no help in
regard to our brokenness. Call out to God. Confess. Repent. Receive forgiveness in
Jesus Christ. Return to the Lord.
What an incredible hope we have in a merciful God; no matter how far we’ve run or how
long we’ve been gone, we are always welcome home through repentance.

What a great reminder to run to God with our problems! Whatever's making us weep, wail, despair, moan, have dried-up joy, etc - may it drive me to seek solace & solutions & strength in Christ and His Word, and not in food or mindless games or sweet movies or any other temporal replacement.
