Today's Passage: Amos 8
Here’s a random but important question: do you prefer to eat a banana more toward the green side or more toward the brown side? We have differing opinions in my house about this topic. The ripeness of the fruit plays a role in its texture, flavor, and overall enjoyment.
In Amos 8, God used a picture of a basket of ripe fruit as a symbol of His judgement against Israel. God says, now is the time! It’s ripe and ready. After so much wandering, idolatry, and disobedience, God had enough with His people. This chapter is explicit in its content regarding God’s judgment.
Here’s another important question, but on a serious note: is God wrong to judge? Is God out of line to bring condemnation on us for our rebellion? Is God unloving to punish? The answer is: absolutely not! Our sin is a big deal and God MUST deal with it appropriately. In His judgment, God is just, holy, and right in whatever decision He makes.
Just as the time was right for this oracle of judgment on Israel, God is never early or late in His rebuke of us. Simultaneously, the time is always right and the fruit is ripe for us to return back to the Lord.
If you’ve wandered, today is the day to run home. God is waiting on you with forgiveness and grace through His Son, Jesus Christ. Just as the time is right for God to judge, the fruit is ripe and the time is now for us to return to Jesus and be met with His incredible mercy. It is not too late.
