Amos 7

Today's Passage: Amos 7

Three different times in this passage the Lord shows his judgment on his people. This was a jarring and sobering wake-up call to God’s people. They assumed that the Lord would only judge the surrounding nations for not following God’s Law, but God also judged them for abandoning his teachings. God has warned them over and over what would happen if they continued to disregard the Law, but they refused to listen.

Two times Amos cries out to the Lord and pleads for mercy, and both times the Lord relents from his wrath towards Israel, but the third time God reveals his judgment to Amos and he remains quiet. Why?

God is so patient with our hard-heartedness and stubbornness. He is kind and gracious to not give us what we deserve, but God is also perfectly just. If we refuse to turn from our sins and ask Jesus to forgive us, then we will ultimately face the just consequences of our sins - God’s wrath.

That’s what makes the gospel so beautiful. Jesus paid the price for our sins. He satisfied the full wrath of God on our behalf. This is also what makes evangelism so crucial. Any friend, family member, co-worker, neighbor, or stranger that hasn’t put their faith and trust in Jesus will face God’s judgment unless they repent and turn to God. That should be our motivation to go and make disciples of every nation!

Family Discussion:
What are some ways that God has been patient with you - giving you time to return to the Lord?
Who are some people in your life that don’t know Jesus?
Who is God calling you to share the gospel with?
