Amos 5

Today's Passage: Amos 5
For I know the vast numbers of your sins and the depth of your rebellions (v. 12)
God is saying this to the people of Israel in Amos 5 because of their great rebellion.
This verse gave me cold chills. I cannot imagine talking to God and hearing Him say, “Brice, I know the vast numbers of your sins…”. I think I would either get sick or faint. Obviously, God understands this better than I ever could.
But then as you read and understand Amos 5, I think there is something we could add to this. In verses 1-17, God is basically saying: Israel, I know the vast number of your sins and the depth of your rebellions, but I LOVE YOU! In verses 1-17, God is pleading with Israel to turn from idols and come back to Him. He wants His children to return. But if they won’t, verse 27 will be carried out: I will send you into exile.
Jesus knew our vast numbers of sins and the depths of our rebellion, but He demonstrated His love for us by going to the cross and suffering to pay for our sin. So now, for those who are in Christ, do not have to fear punishment because Jesus has forgiven us for our unrighteousness.
Therefore, we need to give our devotion to Jesus. Israel messed up because they forgot God’s love for them and turned to worship idols. Let that not be the case for our life.
How would your life look different if you surrendered your desires to God?
