James 1:22-27

Today's Passage: James 1:22-27
Have you ever heard advice and just said, “No thank you”? I know I have. I have a tendency to be stubborn sometimes. I have some very vivid memories of my dad helping me think through how to do something in ministry and often I would think, “I’ll just figure it out and do it my way.” Guess what... I always returned and followed his advice. I learned to listen to him.
This is the picture that James is painting here except something so much more extreme because he is talking about more than advice. He is talking about the holy, inspired, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God. Our heart should always adjust to God’s Word. God’s Word does not adjust to our heart.
Look at what James says...
HEAR IT. DO IT.
James is reminding us... too often we stop at hearing and it doesn’t translate to action. He says that when we do this we deceive ourselves.
The Bible is a mirror. It shows us where we are off. It calls us to adjust ourselves. To not listen would be trusting in US over GOD which is always self deception.
Then he paints this picture in verses 26-27. He will paint it again later in chapter 2. He says that if our actions and our words don’t match up our religion is worthless..
It reminds me of a quote that we have heard a lot around CPC...
Your walk talks and your talk talks... but your walk talks louder than your talk talks.
Hear it.
Do it.
Let God’s Word not just fill your mind. Let it transform your life.

Thank you for this reminder, like Graham's in his recent message on justification, that right theology is never an end in itself. Rather, the goal is life-change/application/conformity to the image of Christ.
