Ecclesiastes 10

Today’s Passage: Ecclesiastes 10

This passage addresses something a lie of our heart that we would never say but we often believe. The lie is this… “I am doing so well… a little sin won’t be that big of a deal.”

Again, we would never say this. It sounds crazy. But often we believe it. Look at Ecclesiastes 10:1…

“As dead flies cause even a bottle of perfume to stink, so a little foolishness spoils great wisdom and honor.”

Or as the ESV says it… “so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.” Sin is never little. Sin is always rebellion against God. It is always taking things into our own hands.

Sin will always take you further than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.

As we grow… we have to guard ourselves. We have to guard our hearts.

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Proverbs 4:23

Solomon addresses several things to guard ourselves from throughout chapter 10…
  • Pride
  • Foolishness
  • Destructive speech
  • Unreasonableness
  • Uncontrolled tongue
  • Boastfulness
  • Indulgence
  • Indifference
  • Indiscretion

Ultimately the way to guard ourselves is to fear God and live in wisdom - applied knowledge.

Verse 4 reminded me of a "little" parenting lesson where I need to guard my heart & grow.... To not give up in the face of anger & aggression but to instead respond with calmness, sticking to the post where God's assigned us.
