Ecclesiastes 2

Today's Passage: Ecclesiastes 2

“And yet I perceived that the same event happens to all of them.” Ecclesiastes 2:14

People often view the book of Ecclesiastes as depressing, but it offers us deep and profound wisdom. As humans we are prone to chase after idols, but even as Christians we can chase after godly idols. Things like: wisdom, success, hard work, love, or joy. All good things, but all unable to satisfy our hearts. The author shows us that as we reach for these things they slip through our fingers and elude us. Even if we obtain them - our end (death) is the same and it is passed to another.

What are you chasing? Is your life aimed toward earthy results or heavenly results? Chapter 2 should cause us to pause and recalibrate our lives. Life is short. Death is certain. But our God is eternal and so is his free gift of salvation. If we spend our lives seeking pleasure and joy we will always be left wanting more. If we search high and low in search of wisdom we will still die just like the fool. If we spend our whole life working for gain it will all be passed to someone else. There’s nothing wrong with those things, but they are shadows that point to the true source of life, joy, wisdom, and blessing - Jesus.

“Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” Matt 16:25

What does the world tell us about the pleasures of life? What does God tell us? (Ps 16:11)

What does the world tell us about wisdom? What does God tell us? (James 3:13-18)

What does the world tell us about hard work? What does God tell us? (Matthew 19:29)
