Romans 5

Today’s Passage: Romans 5
Romans 5 is a beautiful picture of the gospel. It teaches us that when we place our trust, faith, and hope in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sin we…

  • Are justified - declared righteous (v.1)
  • Are bestowed peace - there is no longer a divide with God (v.1)
  • Are given grace - what we do not deserve (v.2)
  • Are filled with joy - because of the hope we have in Jesus (v.2)

Romans 5 also tells us about how Jesus purchased our salvation…

  • He died for us while we were still sinners (v.5-8)
  • Took God’s wrath on our behalf (v.9)
  • He reconciled us even though we were God’s enemies (v.10-12)
  • That as Adam’s disobedience brought DEATH… Jesus’ life of active obedience brought LIFE. (v.12-21)

But I want to focus on verses 3-5. Read them again.

3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

Because of the gospel of Jesus…

1) We can rejoice in suffering (v.3-4)

We know that just as Jesus’ suffering had a purpose, so does ours. God is using it to make us more like Him and that through this suffering we develop endurance for Christ and God develops our character.

2) We can be confident of where we stand with God (v.4)

Because of what Jesus accomplished on the cross, we don’t have to question our standing with God. Verses 1 John 5:13, John 10:27-30, and Ephesians 1:11-4 teach us that we can be confident of our salvation and the hope of it not because of us but because of Him.

3) We can know that God loves us (v.5)

Sometimes as humans, when we walk through suffering and trials, it is easy to question God’s love for us. After all, isn’t He in control and allowed these things? But when we question that we can look dead at the cross of Jesus and know with confidence that God loves us. He loves us so much that He sent Jesus to die for our sin. He has given us His Holy Spirit - the helper. He took our place. He carried our shame.

God is using what we are walking through to make us more in love and dependent upon Him… which is actually loving.

How did God use this to encourage you today?
