Psalm 47

Today's Passage: Psalm 47

What a joyous psalm we get to read today! This one may have been written in response to the victory of one of the kings of Judah, in celebration of the return of the Ark of the Covenant, or simple exuberant praise to God, but I can’t help but think of the return of Christ. In addressing “all peoples” it is signaling the fulfillment of God’s covenant promise to Abraham to bless all nations through his family (Genesis 12:2-3).

This psalm is loud to me. This isn’t calling for whispered prayers and sleepy singing. This is calling for shouts of praise to the sovereign God who has rescued us from our sin through the sacrifice of His Son and who we will one day dwell with forever. He is not in charge of a specific territory, like many believed of the pagan gods of the ancient world. He made and is in control of the entirety of creation. This should push us to worship without holding back!

The psalmist looks ahead to a coming Messianic King, and we get to look back at the fulfilled promise of Jesus coming to earth. He is the righteous King who will reign forever and ever.

How often are we as passionate as the psalmist about what God has done for us? How often do we shout for our favorite sports team, yet have never exhibited that kind of enthusiasm for the Rescuer of our souls?

Take some time to reflect today on the joy and hope in this psalm.

Love this! In a culture of so many distractions I so often understate the glory of our God and King in worship. Encouraging! Well done!
