Psalm 39

Today's Passage: Psalm 39

In Psalm 39, we clearly see David walking through a valley of the shadow of death. It doesn’t say speficially what was going on, but we know that it was enough for him to have to say something about it.

Have you ever been there? A place that the stress and anxiety of life is so great that you are overwhelmed by it?

What David does next is a great model for us in dealing with our own suffering.

What does he do?

He directs his suffering to God.

He reminds himself that his hope is in God, and then begins to make his supplications about his situation.

We also see that David asks for forgiveness of his sin, indicating the possibility that he was suffering because of his sin. To be clear, suffering isn’t always because we sinned—sometimes it’s just a consequence of living in a world that’s been broken because of sin. But it’s never a bad thing to remind yourself of the forgiveness and hope you have in Christ through the gospel.

What we learn from David here is that he does not bottle up his frustration or his hurt, he goes directly to God. This can and should be true of us. No matter the reason for your suffering, we should use it to grow our dependence upon God and his grace and his power to change and redeem.

I think often times I take my suffering first to friends, my spouse, the internet, podcasts, etc for relief/comfort. This was a great reminder to always go to God first!
