Psalm 35

Today's Passage: Psalm 35

This is what is called an Imprecatory psalm, which means it is made up of requests to God to destroy the enemies of His people. Many people pray the psalms aloud; should we pray these types of psalms? I think it depends on your heart's motive in it. I’ve included a link to an article that I think can be helpful in our consideration of this: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/should-we-pray-the-imprecatory-psalms/

When reading this psalm of lament, verses 12 through 18 stood out to me. David describes a situation in which he has deeply cared for someone. He has “rejoiced with those who rejoice and wept with those who weep” (Romans 12:15). But even after this, they repaid his good works and caring with evil and mocking.

This also paints a picture of Christ. He healed people, fed them, had compassion on them, showed His deity to them, and ultimately took on the sin of mankind and was repaid with mockery.

The Christian life is one that will be characterized by caring deeply for people and not just it going unreturned, but getting paid back in evil from the world. We identify with Christ in this way. Let this be an encouragement to you! Continue to worship your Heavenly Father even in the midst of living in a broken world.

“I will thank you in the great congregation;
    in the mighty throng I will praise you.”
Psalm 35:18
