Psalm 30

Today's Passage: Psalm 30

In the contemporary Christian music world, there are thousands of songs that sing about God lifting us up. Songs that speak about God “fixing” or “restoring” or turning mourning into dancing. This is a real truth about who God is and what he does in the life of a believer and Psalm 30 is a great example of that truth, but sandwiched in the middle is the real meat of this psalm.

“As for me, I said in my prosperity,
‘I shall never be moved.’
By your favor, O LORD,
you made my mountain stand strong;
you hid your face;
I was dismayed.”
Psalm 30:6-7

David starts and ends this Psalm with praise and exaltation of the Lord, but in the middle is a story of pride and discipline. It’s easy to exalt the Lord when things are going well, but are you willing to sing that same truth when the Lord makes the mountains in your life stand strong? What about when it feels like the Lord has hidden his face from you?

Our first instinct when trials or discipline comes is to turn our focus towards the problem, but all that does is magnify the issue. What does David do in this Psalm? He turns to the Lord and cries out to him for mercy. David humbles himself before the Lord and gives his attention to God’s faithfulness and mercy and allows his situation to become the fuel for his praise.

Let’s apply this:
You WILL face trials in this life (Jn 16:33), but when they come where will you fix your eyes? You can either focus on the problem or the One who has overcome the world.

Or maybe you’re in midst of the Lord’s discipline right now. That’s ok, he disciplines those he loves (Heb. 12:6). How can you humble yourself before him and allow this situation to fuel your worship?

Are you experiencing God’s blessing right now? Think back to how the Lord has brought you through various trials. How Jesus’ hand guided you and restored you. The darkness of your past trials will serve to magnify the vibrance of God’s grace in your life.

Good word, Joe! I can be quick to forget all that the Lord has done in my life when I'm in a season of waiting. Remembering God's faithfulness has to be a daily occurrence for me or I get discouraged.
