Psalm 11

Today’s Passage: Psalm 11

It is generally believed that this psalm was written by David in response to a friend or counselor of his. The mood of this counselor is panic, as evidenced by his suggestion to run. This well-meaning man is doubting that one righteous person can make a difference in a crisis. It’s unknown if David wrote this in the wilderness while fleeing from Saul, during the uprising led by his son, Absolom, or some other time of difficulty. This crisis could have been personal or national, but regardless, David had made up his mind to trust only the Lord.

I imagine David responding almost with outrage to this person. Over and over again in the life of David, he chose God over fear. Though those counseling David were intending to do good, they were ultimately motivated by fear, causing them to give bad advice. David’s foundation for decision-making was God and His Word.

Is that true of you?  Satan wants to use our fears to stop us from working for God’s Kingdom. Charles Spurgeon once said of this psalm, “He [Satan] will use such plausible logic, that unless we once for all assert our immovable trust in Jehovah, he will make us like the timid bird which flies to the mountain whenever danger presents itself.”

We can be confident that God is not panicking over anything we consider to be a crisis. He is transcendent in his heavenly throne room, but is also sovereign over and involved in the affairs of earth. He is for us, and we are covered by the righteousness of Christ when we are in a relationship with God through Jesus. The counselor in this psalm says, “What can the righteous do?” and David essentially responds, “ What can’t the righteous do when the Lord is on His throne?”

Is your trust truly in God alone? What are some things you are anxious about that you need to hand over to the Lord?

On our mission trip to Panama last week we got to see many examples of what happens when someone fully trusts God, steps out in faith and answers Gods call on their life. We heard stories of leaders who are impacting hundreds or even thousands of lives because they trusted fully and God used them!
