Luke 9:46-62

Luke 9:46-62

Thiabiti Anyabwile describes verses 46-62, as “Four Attitude Adjustments for Reaching Others”. I am going to give you his 4 points, but then fill in information for us.

1. He turns us from Pride to Humility (v. 46-48)

The disciples are arguing over who is the greatest… pretty arrogant when you have Jesus in your midst. But Jesus, takes a “lesser” person in their society (a child), and says those who receive the message of salvation from the “lesser” still receive Jesus. Why is this? Because “the main thing is not the giver of the message but the God in the message.”

2. He turns us from Tribalism to Cooperation (v. 49-50)

Now the disciples want to stop a man from casting out demons because he is not in their clique. Jesus rebukes them. I think oftentimes churches can become tribalistic (and not even intentionally on purpose). We only want people to come to our church. We only pray for our church. But in reality, the success is when lost people are being reached by the Gospel. Whether that is at CPC or Immanuel or Porter.

3. He turns us from Vengeance to Mercy (v. 51-56)

Now the disciples want to murder a whole village for rejecting Jesus. Jesus rebukes the disciples. James 1:20 says, “The anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” If we are trying to reach people with the Gospel, there will be people who reject the message. Instead of being mean, we should be merciful. We don’t know how God is at work in their life. Jesus and the disciples went to the next village (v. 56) and that was the merciful thing to do.

4. He turns us from Security to Sacrifice (v. 57-62)

Each person in our passage failed to commit to Christ because of comfort. Being a follower of Christ does not promise comfort. It actually promises the opposite of comfort. But there are times in our life where we allow comfort and security to hinder us from carrying out the Great Commission (and I am speaking to myself too). As believers, we are called to be people who take up our cross daily, there is no room for comfort in that.

Out of these 4 Attitude Adjustments, which one is most convicting?
