Luke 6:20-49

Luke 6:20-49

Build your House on the Rock

Jesus, in this passage, gives us another angle of the sermon on the mount traditionally found in Matthew 5. The crowds of people have traveled from all over to be healed and hear his teaching, and so Jesus gives them this famous sermon. He obviously covers a lot of topics in these 29 verses, but what is the point of his sermon? What is the big takeaway?

Jesus covers the topic of the attitude of our hearts, loving our enemies, generosity, not judging others, forgiving others, and bearing fruit, but at the very end of the chapter, he gives a teaching on hearing and doing. Those who hear his words and do them are like a man who built his house upon the rock (47-48). This is the takeaway of his sermon.

Jesus has just taught us how to live life God’s way. He taught us how life works best, and he ends his sermon with an illustration that is simple yet convicting - do it. You would think that applying the message would have been understood, but just think about how many powerful, and convicting sermons we’ve listened to that we have failed to put into practice. I don’t know about you, but I often struggle to take God’s Word and truly apply it in a way that leads to life change.

We need Jesus’ words here in Luke 6 to remind us that putting God’s word into practice is how we build a foundation upon God. Has someone ever told you something important and you thought, “I need to remember that!” And then you forgot it by the end of the day? What happens when you write it down? You remember it, yes, but more than that - it becomes real to you. You learn it, believe it, and know it. The same is true of God’s word. When we become doers of the word, then it becomes real, experienced faith.

Does that mean that you’ll perfectly apply every sermon or devotional from now on? No - not even close. But there’s grace for that. We are called to be faithful, not perfect. So as you read this passage or any passage, ask yourself how you can take what you read and live it.

  • What is the reward of building your house upon the rock of God’s word?
  • What needs to change in your life from reading this passage?
