Luke 3:21-28

Luke 3:21-38
Luke 3:21-38 can essentially be broken into two parts: the baptism of Jesus and the genealogy of Jesus.
Why was Jesus baptized? The baptism of Jesus shows that Jesus identified with the sinners he would die for, and it is a picture of death and resurrection that he would endure for those same sinners. Jesus asking to be baptized is not an indictment that Jesus had sin that needed to be forgiven. In fact, John’s reluctance to baptize Jesus shows the distinction between the sinners that John was baptizing and the sinless Jesus (Matthew 3).
At the baptism of Jesus, we also see a Biblical example of the Trinity: the Son (Jesus), the Spirit (the dove), and the Father (the voice). This is a proof of the deity of Christ, as well as gives context to his ministry: the blessing/commissioning of the Father, the power of the Holy Spirit.
What is the point of the genealogy? It is easy to get lost in a sea of names, many of which you have never heard of. But these are valuable. Here’s what the ESV Study Bible says: “Whereas Matthew traces Jesus’ lineage from Abraham to emphasize Jesus’ Jewish heritage, Luke traces it back to Adam to show that Jesus is the fulfillment of the hopes of all people.”
Jesus, the hope of all people! What a great reminder that Jesus did what Adam did not—lived a perfect, righteous life—and died for the sin of Adam.
