Nehemiah 7

Nehemiah 7
Nehemiah 7 is almost identical to Ezra 2. Both chapters focus on the Israelites, who had been in exile to Babylon, returning back to the Promise Land.
Tyler Short (who wrote the Ezra 2 Jumpstart) pointed out how God cares about the details. God cared about each one of these families. He also reminded us that those who have a relationship with Jesus are exiles. We are strangers in a foreign land (earth), and we are forward looking to our Promise Land (Heaven). All of this is such a great reminder!
What is interesting about Nehemiah 7 is verse 1. It says, “Now when the wall had been built and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed.” This verse shows that everything was in order for the return, both practically and spiritually. Practically, because the Temple was complete. Spiritually, because the singers and Levites were in place (those who would lead people in worship).
God did not tell Nehemiah to rebuild the wall and have the people come back so they could look at the wall. They rebuilt it so they could have a place to worship God.
This chapter is one of victory. The work had been accomplished. David Guzik said, “Every victory in our life should take us deeper into praise.” And as we will see in these next chapters, the people of Israel celebrated the victory by reading God’s Law, celebrating a feast, and confessing their sins. The victory led to praise.
What victories have you had in your life recently? Have you praised God for them?
