Nehemiah 1

Nehemiah 1

Nehemiah is distraught when he hears about the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. So much so, that he wept and fasted for days (v. 4). But even in his great distress, he drew closer to God instead of pushing Him away. He didn’t let his circumstances change his view of God.

I want to spend time talking about Nehemiah’s prayer in verses 5-11. He includes 4 things in his prayer that I believe we could use in our everyday prayer life.

1. Recognize (v. 5)

In the ESV, Nehemiah calls God awesome, great, steadfast, and a promise keeper. We should take time in prayer to magnify the name of God because He deserves it. And when we recognize God for who He really is, it puts our life in the right perspective.

2. Repent (v. 6-7)

Nehemiah asked for the forgiveness of sins for his family and all of Israel. We need to tell God we are sorry. We need to ask for forgiveness because we know sin disrupts our relationship with God.

3. Recall (v. 8-10)

Nehemiah remembered the words God had spoken to Moses. There is something powerful about praying through Scripture. You can pray through the promises God has given or the commandments He has commanded. As you read Scripture, pray you would understand it and live it out.

4. Request (v. 11)

Nehemiah asked God to hear his prayer, give him success, and mercy. Do not be afraid to ask God for things. He is your Heavenly Father who loves you. He wants you to bring your requests to Him.

Take time and pray through these four: Recognize, Repent, Recall, and Request.
