Genesis 42
In your life, when you sin, are you sorry for the sin you committed or are you sorry because you are now facing consequences for the sin? Are you sorry that you disrupted your relationship with God or are you sorry because painful things are now happening to you?
In our passage today, Joseph’s brothers seem to fall into the latter end of those questions.
Verses 21-22 say, “21 Speaking among themselves, they said, “Clearly we are being punished because of what we did to Joseph long ago. We saw his anguish when he pleaded for his life, but we wouldn’t listen. That’s why we’re in this trouble.” 22 “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy?” Reuben asked. “But you wouldn’t listen. And now we have to answer for his blood!”
There doesn’t seem to be a lot of remorse for the action of putting Joseph in a pit and then selling him. They are only focusing on their past sin because of the obstacles that they are now facing.
We see the pain Joseph experiences from hearing their words in verses 23-24. I cannot imagine how he must have felt in this moment.
I think it’s important to learn from the fault of the brothers. Repentance should happen when we recognize the wrong we have done. It shouldn’t wait until we are facing consequences for those actions.
What sin or sins do you need to repent of today? What do you need to tell God you are sorry for?
And as you repent, remember the words of 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
