Genesis 22:20-23:20

Genesis 22:20-23:20

These passages record a couple of firsts.

First is that Sarah’s age is the only woman’s age at death that is recorded in all of Scripture. This is most likely to remind us of the birth of Isaac happening well after her childbearing years should have been over, but also to show her importance in God’s plan.

Second is that this passage ends with Abraham owning a small piece of the land that was divinely promised to him and to his descendants. The first time a part of the Promised Land is possessed. This is after years of nomadic wandering!

Both of these “firsts” are significant and related. This real estate was purchased in order for Abraham to start an ancestral burial ground in the land of promise! This was a functional foothold for Abraham in this land. Sarah was key in God’s plan to fulfill His word to her and Abraham and bless the world through their line. To bury Sarah here meant that the way they moved from here on out was bound to and affected by Canaan.

Abraham burying Sarah here, of all places, shows that he trusted that God would one day make this land the home of his descendants. Abraham is comfortable and confident that burying Sarah here is the right thing to do because this land is ultimately “home”. He even paid an exorbitant price for it.

How do you display confidence in God’s will as you go through difficult circumstances?
