Genesis 22:1-19

Genesis  22:1-19

When we focus on this passage, the faith of Abraham is on full display. God had promised to Abraham that his lineage would continue through Isaac, and yet here he is about to sacrifice him. We know from Hebrews 11:17-18 though, Abraham had so much faith in God that he believed God would raise Isaac from the dead if he were to sacrifice his son.

But there is something else in this passage I want to focus on. After the angel told Abraham not to sacrifice Isaac, Abraham sees a sacrifice, and upon seeing it he says, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided” (v. 14). And the mountain they were on was Mount Moriah (v. 2).

What is significant about this? In 2 Chronicles 3:1 it says, “Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah.” The Temple for the Lord was likely built on the same mountain where Abraham almost sacrificed Isaac.

Fast forward a few thousand years, and God once again provides a sacrifice on that mountain. The sacrifice being His Son, Jesus. The ultimate sacrifice. The sacrifice that brought redemption.

THINK ABOUT HOW CRAZY THAT IS. Abraham was talking about how the Lord had provided a ram instead of his son, and yet God provided on that mountain His Son to be the sacrifice.

It truly is amazing how the Lord works even in the small details of life.

How have you seen God show up in your life recently?

It jumped out to me this morning how Abraham had to be faithful and obedient in the small things before more blessings and responsibilities were given to him. Verses 16-18 say:

"This is what the Lord says: Because you have obeyed me and have not withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by my own name that I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies. And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed-all because you have obeyed me."

We too are called to be obedient and faithful in the small things. Obedience opens the door to added responsibilities, influence, and blessings. Make the most of whatever opportunities you currently have; don't view them as insignificant.
