Genesis 7

Genesis 7

If you haven’t read Genesis 6 and the post on that passage from Saturday, I encourage you to pause and go read those passages before reading Genesis 7.

Essentially, Genesis 6 is talking about the wickedness caused by sin throughout the earth, with the exception of Noah, who “was a righteous man, blameless in his generation… walked with God.” If the main point of Genesis 6 is the seriousness of sin and wickedness, the main point of Genesis 7 is the seriousness that God takes towards sin.

In Genesis 2, God commands Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, or else they would die. Death is the natural punishment because of our sin. The fact that God did not strike Adam and Eve dead after they sinned was not evidence of God not caring about their sin, it is an evidence of God’s grace towards them (and towards us). The reality is that God owes us nothing; the only thing we deserve from God is death and seperation in hell because of our sin. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 6:23)

Genesis 7 is a reminder of just how seriously God takes sin and unrighteousness. We see this as a warning against sin and this reminder should cause a healthy fear of God in our hearts. It should also encourage us that Jesus has paid for sin once and for all through his life, death and resurrection. In Christ, when God looks at us, he is no longer wrathful towards us, but forgiving. We can do nothing to earn it, but we should be thankful for it and respond in desiring to love and honor God, not to earn God’s love and approval, but because we already have God’s love and approval in Christ.

Question:
What would it look like for you to live in light of how seriously God takes your sin?
