Genesis 5

Genesis 5

To understand the importance of Genesis 5, we need to look back at Genesis 3 and 4.

In Genesis 3, God promises there will come a descendant from the offspring of the woman, and this offspring will crush the serpent (Gen 3:15). Well, when we look at Genesis 4, Eve bears a son. She says, “I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord” (v. 1). Eve thought that her firstborn son was going to be the one to crush the serpent. But as we know, her firstborn was Cain who ends up killing his brother, Abel. Cain acted more like the serpent than who God promised to bring about deliverance.

This leads us to Genesis 5. Adam and Eve have another son named Seth (v. 3). And what we learn from Genesis 5 is two things:

1. People lived for a long time at this point in history! (Adam lived 930 years)

2. Through Seth, the Savior of the world would come. Eve thought that Cain would bring deliverance over the serpent, but that was not God’s plan. God was just starting the beautiful story of redemption. Jesus would come through the lineage of Seth. God never wavered on His promise in Genesis 3:15, but it was going to happen on His timing.

You can read about Genesis 5 in Luke 3:23-38. The genealogies show proof to the accuracy of Scripture. There is no contradiction between Luke 3 and Genesis 5.

Be thankful to God that He is detailed in His Word. He provides truth and accuracy through His Word so that we may trust it. And be thankful for God’s plan of salvation, that we may read it, know it, and experience it in our own life.

How does Genesis 5 comfort you?
