Proverbs 28

Proverbs 28

Chapter 28 has so many great things to say to us.

“When there is moral rot within a nation, its government topple easily. But wise and knowledgeable leaders bring stability.” (v.2)

We’ve all seen this first hand –whether it has been in federal, state, or local government – here or around the world. The moral fiber of a people is either its strength or its destruction. There is no middle ground. Who we are today is always affecting who we are becoming tomorrow.

“Better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and rich.” (v.6)

Money, pleasure, and material possessions are among the things we value most important. But what are they worth? What would you sell yourself for? Honesty is of greater value than wealth. To be able to look at yourself in the mirror is priceless. Character trumps “success” every time.

“People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.” (v.13)

Secrecy kills –Honesty heals. Hiding a sin doesn’t make it go away or solve the issue. Too often we believe that this is what will happen. Confession (1 John 1:9, James 5:16) to God and others is key. This means admitting the sin and taking steps to avoid it brings healing (Repentance- go the other direction). God is merciful to us – not giving us what we really deserve. We don’t deserve Him but that is exactly what He gives us - Himself.

“Blessed are those who fear to do wrong, but the stubborn are headed for serious trouble.” (v.14)

Stubbornness comes from our pride. We believe we know best. According to this verse – it can be deadly in our relationships and in our lives. Fearing the Lord and fear of doing wrong can be a compass to guide us in a confusing world.

Thischapter had A LOT of great things to say! What stood out to you? Share it with us today.

Family Discussion:
1) Why do we sometimes think it is better to hide oursin instead of talk to God and others about it? 2) Read 1 John 1:9 - What does God say about it?
3) What does it mean to have a relationship with Jesus?

Verse 6 - Possessing an honest character makes you rich in God. Having favor with Him is far more valuable than money in the bank.

Verse 16 - Rulers/leaders/parents need to be understanding so as to avoid oppressive-ness. This verse challenged me to work hard to be understanding even in difficult moments when conflict & stress cannot be avoided. To choose love & patience even when things feel way too hard. To seek understanding even when exhausted. To fight that exhaustion. I need to remember this verse.
