Proverbs 15

Proverbs 15

Our words matter. So often we convince ourselves that words are just words… that the way that we talk doesn’t matter too much. But this is not true! Think about a time that you were really hurt by someone or really encouraged by someone - more than  likely, words were involved.

Jesus tells us that our words matter in Luke 6:45…

“45 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.”

James reminds us of the value of our words throughout James 1 and James 3 - using pretty strong language toward the way that we speak.

What Solomon is telling us is that when we possess wisdom, we speak differently.

1) We speak gently (v.1)
2) We speak informed (v.2)
3) We speak honestly (v.4)
4) We speak for the good of others (v.7)
5) We speak “cool-tempered” (v.18)
6) We speak with humility (v.33)

These are direct results of following God closely. Wisdom comes from God when we fear Him and walk with Him in obedience (Proverbs 1:7).

How have you seen your speech change when walking with God? How has God brought you wisdom in the way that you speak with others?

Family Discussion:
1) Why does what we say matter?
2) How can we use our words for good? How can we use our words for bad?
3) What does it look like to obey God by the way that we talk?

God is still molding my heart and therefore my words. I loved v30. "A cheerful look brings joy to the heart." Having the right posture and engagement when talking with others is important and I think I struggle with that.

Iam the clay God is the potter. Still working on my language God has helped me use other words than cuss words. But speaking positive in a negative world is so hard!! Seems like negativity hits me from every angle whether it be at work or at home or even at the gym!! Taking captive of my thoughts into obedience with Christ is so hard on my own ,Jesus help me!!
