Proverbs 5

Proverbs 5
Main Point: Sexual sin is attractive, but very dangerous.
Sexuality is plastered all over our society. We see it in cologne commercials, Instagram, tv shows and movies, and even on billboards. Thankfully, God’s Word, and Proverbs 5 in specific, alert us about the dangers and show us ways to fight against sexual sin.
We see the attractiveness in verse 3, “for the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey”, but we also see the dangers in verse 5, “her steps follow the path to Sheol”, and in verse 22, “the iniquities of the wicked ensnare him.” Sexual sin may seem attractive, but it can quickly become addictive and dangerous.
So what does Proverbs 5 teach us about how to fight sexual sin? Let me give you 4 ways:
1. Flee from sexual temptations (v. 7-8)
Fleeing means to turn around and run. It is trying to avoid it at all costs. And ‘fleeing’ may mean we do drastic things (giving up social media, not going to certain areas, breaking up with someone, etc.)
2. Think through the future (v. 11)
Verse 11, “and at the end of your life you groan, when your flesh and body are consumed”. There are consequences to sexual sin, even if they do not show up right now.
3. If you are married, be true to your spouse (v. 15-19)
Verse 18, “rejoice in the wife of your youth”. It says to rejoice! Delight in your spouse. The more in love you are with them, the less your eyes will wander.
4. Know that God is watching (v. 21)
Verse 21, “for a man’s ways are before the Lord.” If we can keep this at the forefront of your mind every day, I can imagine that we would sin a lot less. But with sexual sin, we may be able to deceive the people around us, but we can never deceive God.
I am praying this is helpful no matter what stage of life you are in!
