John 4:43-56

September Memory Verse: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3 (ESV)

Read: John 4:43-56

Do we have enough faith to take Jesus at His word? If we take someone at their word, it means we believe exactly what they say. In your life, do you take Jesus at His word?

When Jesus says, “Do not fear”, are you afraid? When He says, “Don’t take the job promotion”, do you take the job promotion anyways? When He says, “Share the Good News with that person”, do you share the Gospel with them?

Jesus might not speak to us audibly, but we all know that feeling when He is showing us a direction to go or a thing to do. And when that feeling arises, do we listen? Because listening takes faith.

In our passage today, a man comes to Jesus because his son is about to die. The guy had come to Jesus in desperation. All hope was lost. I am not a parent, but I’m sure every parent can attest to the urgency of this guy’s request. He needed Jesus to perform a miracle. But it’s very interesting because Jesus did not go with the guy. Instead, Jesus said, “Go back home. Your son will live!”, and the guy took Jesus at His word.

The man had faith that what Jesus had said would come to pass, and it did.

In your life, what has Jesus been trying to tell you lately? And are you willing to step into it, even if it is frightening or difficult?

This is good news from the Lord, this encounter.

A comment on verse 48 states, "The response of the Galileans was fundamentally flawed because it disregarded the person of Christ and centered in the need for a constant display of miraculous signs. Such an attitude represents the deepest state of unbelief."

So I take away two points: I am very likely dependent on my circumstances when it comes to my trusting in Christ, much like an unbeliever depends on worldly matters. Its like saying, "I believe, Lord, help my unbelief." An imperfect faith, mixed with doubt.

And second, Jesus demonstrates His graciousness, His compassion, and of course, His power over troubles in this life. And look at the fruit of today's passage that comes from trusting Him more.

Perhaps He is saying, despite the reluctance and uncertainty, trust in Me for today. It's such a small step, but if done daily, look at the fruit of trusting Him more.
