John 1:1-18

September Memory Verse: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3 (ESV)

Read: John 1:1-18

The big picture of this passage is to explicitly proclaim that Jesus is God, but I want to focus on 3 verses that carry a huge impact for us as believers.

“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.  He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him.  He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.” John 1:6-8

I want to look at three aspects of these verses. First, God sent John the Baptist. He was commissioned and sent by God to bear witness to Jesus and so are you. If you believe and profess Jesus as your Lord and savior, then you are called by God to GO and make disciples. You are being sent to a lost wold with the light of Christ. We can be deceived into disobedience when we believe the lie that only missionaries or pastors are called/sent by God. John the Baptist was sent from God and so are we.

Secondly, John did not save anyone but his testimony about Jesus led others to trust the one who could save them. Think about how you came to know Jesus. Someone, somewhere outlined the gospel for you and you believed. God could have just directly revealed himself to you, but instead he used one (or many) of his children to share the gospel with you. Now you get to the pleasure and honor of proclaiming what Jesus has done for you with others. God uses the faithful witnesses of believers to bring people to faith in Christ - so be on mission!

Finally, John was nothing special. He was not God, yet Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he” (Matt 11:11). John was great because his entire life was a sign that pointed to Christ. What is stopping you from living that same kind of life today? If Jesus is truly God in the flesh, then what he has done is deserving of our life and proclamation. As you go about your day today, think of ways you can be a faithful witness to God right where you are.

Make everything you do today a sign that points to gospel.

John 1 has become my favorite chapter in the Bible over time. I love how the first verse boldly declares the authority of scripture.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (NIV)

Verse 14 clearly proclaims that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the Word.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace & truth. (NIV)

If we’re honest about it, all of us have read parts of scripture that were confusing or difficult to believe. I take comfort in knowing that all scripture is God breathed (II Timothy 3:16) and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, & training in righteousness.

Simply put, God’s word is reliable and Jesus is the fulfillment of the Word! We are so blessed to have free access to God’s Word and it is imperative for believers to spend time in it daily. Thanks for the commentary today Joe.

Yes! We should view it as a “pleasure and honor” to share the gospel. Thank you, Joe!
