1 Timothy 6

June Memory Verse: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)

Read: 1 Timothy 6

Today we conclude our brief walk through 1st Timothy with Paul’s final instructions to his son in the faith.  Paul warns Timothy about false teachers & false doctrine and to continue with the “wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ”.  Paul says these evil people have minds that are corrupt and have turned their backs on the truth.  Next Paul addresses something near and dear to many people’s hearts, their money!  He warns Timothy that “people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish & harmful desires that plunge them into ruin & destruction”.

Verse 10a is one of the most misunderstood and misquoted verses in all of scripture.  Have you ever heard someone say, “money is the root of all evil”?  That is a mischaracterization of what the verse actually says.  For the LOVE of money is the root of all kinds of evil.  Wealth that is earned from honest work and wise investing is a blessing from the Lord and provides for families, ministries, church budgets, missions, and all kinds of good works.  Paul tells Timothy that “true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth”.  Verse 7 reminds me of an old saying that you never see a hearse on the way to a cemetery with a U-Haul behind it.  “After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.”  The treasures we build in heaven and the people who will be there as a result of us testifying to the saving grace of Jesus are the only things we keep for eternity.  True peace and contentment cannot be found with wealth or material goods but only through a relationship with God through his son Jesus.

  • How has this passage made you think about false teachers & false doctrines we see in our culture in 2021?  (Sadly, there are many who are attracting large audiences)
  • How will you “fight the good fight for the true faith”?
  • Do you need to make any changes in the way you think about money and your stewardship of this blessing from the Lord?

Great message today! There is so many false teachings and misquotes out there today. It is more critical than ever to read and understand what the scriptures say.

The u-haul quote brought back memories of my pastor at my hometown church. That was his favorite quote he often used. 🙂

Enjoyed the entire study about 1 Timothy!

This passage of scripture demonstrates so well how deceived humans are about what is vital and should be pursued. The heart of man is "deceitful above all things." The biggest hurdle to overcome is keeping God first in our hearts and shunning idols, money being the most tempting. It can't be said enough that prayer and keeping in the Word are the only ways to keep from being deceived.

Thanks for your commentary today, Mike.
