1 Timothy 5

June Memory Verse: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)

Read: 1 Timothy 5

1 and 2 Timothy are letters from Paul dealing with practical issues in the church.  These books are some of what we call the pastoral epistles.  Today we see some of Paul’s instructions to his disciple Timothy who is pastoring the church in Ephesus.

Kindness to Others
In verses 1-2, Paul reminds young Timothy how he is to address the church members who are older than him (that is probably almost all of them!). This is a good standard for us too.  Our society used to look up to those older than us.  Somehow, this has gone by the wayside.  It’s a great loss.  As believers, we need to understand and remember this principle.  Paul encourages Timothy to speak kindly and respectfully to older men, and to treat other women with purity as you would your mother or sisters.

Care for Widows
The Bible has a lot to say about our responsibility to care for the poor and for widows and orphans.  We read about this in both the Old and New Testaments.  The church, and believers share this responsibility.

Respect of Elders
Elders are to be the governing and teaching authorities in the church.  We read this all throughout the book of Acts and the letters to the churches that follow.  1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 give us the requirements for them.  There are two types of elders – lay elders (those who work other jobs for income but volunteer their time to lead the church) and vocational elders (those who receive their livelihood from their full-time ministry in the church).  Paul instructs Timothy to make sure they are paid well and respected - to carefully weigh any accusations that may come against them, and to respect their authority in the church.

The church is a beautiful thing!  It’s Jesus' visible body here on earth.  We must work to strengthen and support it.  I’m thankful for the church God has given us (cpclex.org).  Take a few minutes and pray for your church and pastors now.
