The Great Sin of Unbelief…

God’s Covenant with Israel
In verses 1 – 5 we are reminded of God’s adoption and covenants with His chosen people Israel.

They are the people of Israel, chosen to be God’s adopted children. God revealed his glory to them. He made covenants with them and gave them his law. He gave them the privilege of worshipping him and receiving his wonderful promises. (v.4)

We live in a changing political climate in which the sentiment is moving away from allegiance with Israel.  The Bible told us this would happen in the last days.  Those who stand by God’s people have always enjoyed blessings from God.  Israel is God’s chosen people – He loves them and so should we.

God’s Choice to Show Mercy to His People
God is Sovereign and completely in charge of the affairs of mankind.  He is the One who decides how things will go.  God shows mercy to His people.

I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.” (v.15)

Stop and thank Him for the mercy He has shown to you through sending His Son into the world to bring salvation.  God did not give us what we deserve, He showed us mercy, forgiving us of our sin and restoring us to Himself.

The Sin of Unbelief
God loved the people of Israel and sent Jesus, the Messiah to them to save them from their sins.  But they rejected Him – trying to get to God through keeping the law rather than through receiving God’s Son.  They refused to believe in the One that could save them and change their lives forever.

That’s what many people we know, go to school with, work with, pass every day, are doing.  They are rejecting their only hope – Jesus.  It is our responsibility and privilege to tell them who Jesus is, so that they might believe in Him and be saved.

Sometimes our unbelief keeps us from all God wants for us.  The lack of faith or trust in God is a major prohibitor in seeing our prayers answered (James 1:5-7), having peace and joy in our Christian walk, and realizing the real fruitfulness that God intends for us.

Don’t practice unbelief any longer.  Trust in Jesus to save and keep and satisfy you today!

Great job, Tim!

What sticks out to me are the two false Gospels that Paul talks about:

1. Inherited faith - people are Christian because their family is

2. Works based salvation - people earn their way to God

Both are common misconceptions and take place all the time. As Tim said, we have to be sharing the true hope of Jesus with others!

Thanks so much for your insight on this, Tim. Replacement theology is a big problem in the church. We appreciate you sharing the truth!

Today I was struck by the first 5 verses and the heart they flow out of. Paul had just gotten done writing about the amazing blessing of knowing Jesus and being connected to Him no matter what. That immediately led to Paul being broken over people that don't know Jesus. I was very convicted because a right view of all the blessings we have in Christ should lead us to love Him and to freely share Him with others because we want them to experience the same blessings. I often don't have this heart, so I need to more fully trust and understand who God is and all He has given me!

When you wrote-Sometimes our unbelief keeps us from all God wants for us-I realized how much I needed to hear that! Thanks Tim. Along with this passage, I am asking the Lord to increase my faith!
