Acts 10

April Memory Verse: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8 NIV

Read: Acts 10

What I love about Acts 10 is that it follows Acts 9. Yesterday, we saw the conversion of a Jewish man named Saul (who would later turn into Paul). Today, in Acts 10, we see Gentiles come into a relationship with Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit.

Peter receives a vision showing him that the Gospel is for everyone. In the Old Testament, Jews were not allowed to eat certain animals. The animals would be labeled unclean. In Peter’s vision, he sees the unclean food but God says these things are now clean. The point was made that Gentiles are no longer considered “unclean”, instead, it signifies that Jesus has come for all people.

I think we need to pause and think about how big of a moment this is. This changes everything for the Jews and the Gentiles. It should remind us of what Paul talks about in Ephesians 3:6, “This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel.” Gentiles are now able to be a part of God’s people.

The reminder for us is that: God is the God of the nations. We cannot or should not believe that God is only an American God. Acts 10:34-35 make it very clear, “I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right.”

If we believe that God loves one group of people more than another, we are mistaken. In eternity, there will be people from every tribe, language, nation, and tongue bowing before the Heavenly throne. All will be singing in harmony. What a glorious day that will be!

So my question for you: Has there been anyone or a group of people in your life that you have excluded from the Gospel? What can you do to change that?

I grew up thinking that America was the greatest and God loves us the most. Not that I would have said God hated other nations... I just never even considered the other nations, period. It really wasn’t until I took the Perspectives on World Missions class that I understood God is a missionary God for ALL NATIONS. In fact, Christ will not return until every unreached people group is reached. While we don’t know exactly how that will be done or what that looks like, how incredible will heaven be! Think of the cultures and different people groups that we will get to worship with.

Good message today Brice, I love this passage.

23 When he arrived and saw this evidence of God’s blessing, he was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord.

Good word to start the week Brice.

Verse 23 caught my attention this morning. What does it mean to “stay true to the Lord”? Since John 1:14 makes it clear that “the Word became flesh” in the person of Jesus, staying true to the Lord includes staying true to the Word. One of the biggest problems I see in American Christianity is that “believers” are NOT staying true to the Word. Many see scripture as a buffet of options and they pick and choose what they like and then swim with the flow of culture. (i.e. marriage redefined, universalism, secularism, and numerous other false doctrines)

Regarding your questions today Brice: I am blessed to work with many professionals from Asia who have been living in America for ten years or more. God has opened doors for me to share the gospel with a number of them. Sadly, I’ve heard several people say that Christianity is an American cultural religion and that they are Hindu or Muslim. As if your faith were determined by place of birth and where you were raised. I’ve tried explaining to them that Jesus came to reveal God in human flesh and provide salvation for everyone in the world. It makes me wonder if they don’t see any difference in the lives of those who claim Christ as their Lord? Believers should look very different to the lost world. If we blend into the culture and can’t be distinguished from the crowd then something is wrong. My prayer for the church is that Christians in America and around the world will boldly live out the Word and look for opportunities to share Jesus.
