Colossians 2

February Memory Verse: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)

Read: Colossians 2

Have you ever been deceived?  Ever read or heard something that sounded really good just to find out that it was not true? What is interesting is that we are never fooled by illogical things… only things that make sense.

So many things in our world sound so good but just are not true… they are lies.

“All you have to do is try harder to get into heaven…”
“The better you do in life, the more God will love you…”
“Whatever way you choose to God will work. God understands. Just choose a path and go for it.”

And this is just the beginning. The list of lies that our culture and world throws at us on a daily basis just keeps going and going. They sound SO GOOD until you hold them up to the Word of God. Only when we see them through the truth of God do they really show themselves for what they are… illogical.

LIES OF THE WORLD CAN NEVER HOLD UP TO THE TRUTH OF JESUS.

Paul, in chapter 2,  is writing to the Church in Colossae about this very thing reminding them of where knowledge and wisdom comes from… Jesus and His Word (v.2-5).

Proverbs tells us this as well…

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;” - Proverbs 2:6

Then Paul  gets into the main part of what he is saying. He is saying, since wisdom and knowledge and truth come from Jesus, since the world is trying to “delude you with plausible arguments”, since this… do this. He says this in verse 6-7… THEREFORE…

Walk in Jesus.
Be rooted in Him.
Be established in him.

He reminds them in verses 8-15 that Jesus is not just another man whose ways will fade. He is the living God. He is fully God and fully man. Everything is about Him. He is over it all. He has changed our identity. He has made us alive. He has changed who we belong to - we now belong to God. He canceled our debt on the cross. He didn’t just say that He was the way… He proved He was the way.

Paul says this to command and encourage them to process life -  things they hear, things they see, and things they experience - through the truth of Jesus. This is hard but this is how we determine what is true… we compare things to Jesus and His Word. This is why He gave us His Word - 2 Timothy 3:16-17. This is the litmus test.

What we tend to do is view things through a different lens - the lens of our emotion. But emotions, though good things given to us by God, cannot show us what is true. We have to walk in Jesus, be rooted in Him, and be established in Him. We have to choose to ask God what He says instead of asking how we feel about it.

Only then can we see what is true and follow it. This is how we guard from being deceived by things in our world.

What are some thing that the world tells us that sounds really good until we look at it through the Word of God?

I love this passage! It’s very similar to what we’re walking through tomorrow in church - 6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. What incredible advice!

Tim, I thought about your message from Sunday too as I read the verse about letting our roots grow down into Him. It reminded me of what you said... "it’s not about getting more of Him, it’s about giving Him more of us." What a great reminder that God does not force us to love Him, but desires us to love Him. And when we do, He gives us far more than we could ever imagine! Don’t settle for less than what God wants for your life!

He didn’t just say that He was the way… He proved He was the way. Love that, Nick!

Frequently I hear from my liberal friends "why would a loving God only provide one way to get to Him?" I heard a speaker say once, and I never forgot it, "that is not the real question. The real question is

Sorry, it submitted before I was finished. The real question is why God would provide any way at all, given our rejection of Him. The fact that He provides any way at all shows what a loving God He is.

I love that Lindsay! I will have to remember that one...

Love that Lindsay. "Why would He provide any way at all"

That’s great Lindsay! Thank you for sharing that.

I saw a little video on Facebook the other day and it was talking about how can a loving God SEND people to hell and the guy was saying God isn’t SENDING us to hell, that’s where we are naturally going—God provided A WAY OUT just like he says in 1 Corinthians 10:13–he provides a way out—HIM! How gracious for Him to provide a way at all!!!

Good word today Nick!

Christ himself. 3) In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

The last part of verse 2 and verse 3 really spoke to me today. So how do we find this hidden treasure, wisdom, & knowledge? At least 4 things are critical after we repent and ask Jesus to become our Savior.

1) Read His Word

2) Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you discernment

3) Worship & study individually & corporately with a body of Bible believing Christians

4) Have accountability with one or more believers

We’ll never understand all the mysteries of God this side of heaven. However if we diligently pursue Jesus all our lives He will reveal marvelous things to us. Have a blessed weekend JS readers.

Great passage here. This is the basics of what it means to walk with Christ. We need to be firmly rooted in God's word so that we can speak against the lies of the world. I think of the church today and some of the false doctrine that is being taught. This is why it's so important to not just hear a message on Sunday mornings, but to listen to what God's word says. So often today, churches will water down the gospel, and people don't even know that what they are hearing isn't what scripture actually says (the prosperity gospel movement comes to mind). I'm thankful that CPC has leaders that teach sound doctrine, and that aren't afraid to preach what the Bible says. God's word is the foundation of what we should live our lives on, so we need to be rooted in it so we can resist the lies of the world.
