1 Kings 19:19-21

Today's Passage: 1 Kings 19:19-21
After that incredibly long read, let’s talk about discipleship!
In our verses, Elijah calls Elisha to come join him on mission. There are so many things we can learn about discipleship in this passage. As we talk about discipleship, we will define it as: a spiritually mature Christian investing in a less spiritually mature Christian.
Ask yourself: Am I someone who should be discipling or should be discipled? What is stopping me from taking that step?
If you are discipling someone, are you working to send them out? If not, why?
If you are being discipled, are you preparing yourself to disciple someone else? What would make you ready?

In our verses, Elijah calls Elisha to come join him on mission. There are so many things we can learn about discipleship in this passage. As we talk about discipleship, we will define it as: a spiritually mature Christian investing in a less spiritually mature Christian.
- You need a discipleship relationship. Let’s start by asking the question, who is discipleship for? From our passage, it is clear what God is going to do for Elisha. He is going to let the prophet Elijah spend time investing in him – teaching him how to be a prophet for God. But I don’t think this relationship was just for Elisha. I think Elijah needed it too. If you remember from yesterday, Elijah was isolated and didn’t seem to be in the best place, he said to God, “I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” Elijah needed someone too. The simple answer: discipleship is for everyone.
- Be looking for who to disciple. Elijah cast his cloak upon Elisha (I am not saying go throw your coat on someone and that makes them your disciple), and it signified the transferring of prophetic powers to him. In this case, Elijah knew who he was going to invest in. For you, God may not make it that easy, but if you are involved at CPC, in a Connect Group, and serving, God is going to place you around people that need to be discipled.
- Be ready to be discipled. After Elijah’s invitation, Elisha leaves everything to be discipled. He told his family bye. He burned all his oxen – showing he was leaving everything. God might not ask you to give up everything, but are you willing to cut out something in your life to make time to be discipled? Maybe it means quitting a hobby, not working an extra hour, or waking up earlier. You are never going to grow in holiness by accident.
