2 Timothy 2:22-26

Today's Passage: 2 Timothy 2:22-26

Flee and Pursue

As followers of Christ, we are called to both flee and pursue—flee from sin and the desires of our flesh and pursue the things of God. In 2 Timothy 2, Paul gives Timothy instructions that, while directed at leaders, apply to all believers.

The Christian life is a lifelong journey of turning away from sin. Yet many believers struggle with the same patterns of sin for years because their focus is solely on stopping. They try to resist temptation through sheer willpower, only to fall back into the same habits. But Paul provides the key to true transformation: don’t just flee—pursue. Another way to put it is to remove and replace.

Sin is deeply rooted in our hearts, and if we only attempt to remove it without replacing it with something greater, it will grow back. Instead, Paul tells us to fill that space with righteousness, faith, love, and peace. The more we pursue God, the less room sin has to take hold. Rather than focusing on fixing ourselves, we shift our gaze to Christ, seeking more of Him and His Spirit in our lives.

Paul also emphasizes that we cannot do this alone. We are called to pursue God in community, where we receive instruction, correction, and encouragement from fellow believers. In verse 25, he reminds us to correct one another with gentleness, reinforcing that the church is meant to be a place of support—not shame. The Christian life is difficult, and we will fail at times. But God has designed the church to be a source of strength, where we lift each other up and point one another back to Christ.

So, what’s the takeaway from this passage? Flee sin and pursue Jesus. And don’t do it alone—seek out a discipleship relationship or join a community of believers who will walk with you, encourage you, and help you grow. Together, we pursue God and experience true transformation.
