1 Timothy 5:1-16

Today's Passage: 1 Timothy 5:1-16

Paul is beginning to wrap up his letter to Timothy by encouraging different groups of people in how the gospel should shape the way they live.

Our section today looks at the ways the church should care for widows.

If you read Acts 6, you will see this has been a part of the heart of the church since the beginning. True widows were in a very hard way of life during this time, so it should be encouraging to us to see the way the church would and should come around widows to provide care.

The gospel should shape our lives, and the gospel should shape our church.

Paul draws a sharp line in terms of how our actions, specifically in this passage, how we treat widows, and whether or not the gospel has really gripped our hearts or not.

“But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” (5:8)

Not caring for family is akin to not actually being a Christian.

The gospel shaped church is a church that cares for each other, especially the vulnerable. For Center Point, three of the main ways we seek to care for others is through Connect Groups, serving, and discipleship. If you are not involved in one or more of those areas, take a next step today!

In what ways do you need to grow in loving and caring for others? In what ways does our church need to grow in loving and caring for others?
